How are the IRS Standard Mileage Rates Calculated?
The IRS calculates the standard mileage rates by conducting an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile.
You can usually expect the mileage rates to go up or down if the price of gas has risen or dropped significantly, however gas price is not the only factor. Changes to the cost of car repair and ownership may also factor into the calculation of the IRS standard mileage rates.
One rate that usually stays steady is the charitable mileage rate. The IRS charitable mileage rate has been $0.14 per mile for the past twenty years at least.
